First Climate Tech Startup in the MENA Region Receives B Corp Certification

Dubai, UAE – [May, 2024]

In a groundbreaking development for the MENA region’s climate-tech industry, The Surpluss has proudly become the first startup to achieve B Corporation certification.

Certified B-Corporations are businesses that meet high standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose.

The Surpluss, a visionary climate-tech startup, has been at the forefront of transforming linear supply chains into circular ecosystems, enabling businesses to share resources effectively and sustainably.

Rana Hajirasoul, Founder of The Surpluss stated: “B Corp certification was a clear way for us to communicate and validate our commitment to  high verified business standards, while prioritizing social and environmental responsibility,” also reflected on the  journey: “This journey required incredible dedication from our entire team, who tirelessly reconfigured protocols and established new business processes to ensure we met the most stringent global standards.

This achievement is particularly significant given the emerging B Corp presence in the region. While there are over 8,000 B Corps worldwide, the UAE is home to only a handful, with The Surpluss being the 9th.

Despite being an early stage startup, The Surpluss dedicated itself to a year-long process of becoming a B Corp. This commitment underscores their deep-rooted belief in embedding purpose and impact directly into their business model, setting a powerful example for the broader business community to join the movement. The Surpluss achieved a remarkable score of 86.7 on the B Impact Assessment, significantly exceeding the average company score of 50.9.

Mena Impact,- a mission-driven consultancy and academy that empowers businesses and individuals for a meaningful impact with a commitment to fostering a robust impact ecosystem through strategic partnerships in the MENA region- has been instrumental in guiding The Surpluss towards this achievement with their distinctive approach.

Nadine Zidani, founder of Mena Impact, reflected on the journey:  “In the Middle East, the B Corp movement is just beginning. The B Corp certification is globally recognized but extremely demanding to obtain. Collaborating with early-stage companies like The Surpluss, witnessing their efforts to shape an impact business model, is truly inspiring for businesses in the region.”.

The Surpluss and Mena Impact have forged a powerful partnership that is setting new benchmarks for corporate sustainability, demonstrating that businesses can be a force for good. Their collaboration is elevating The Surpluss to new heights while solidifying Mena Impact’s influential role in fostering a better world through educational and certification support.

As we forge ahead, The Surpluss and Mena Impact  stand united in their belief that the future of business is sustainable, responsible, and inclusive. This certification is not just an end but a beginning—a promise to continue driving innovation and impact for a greener, more equitable world.
